Abstract
On 1 January 1937 Dr Henry Durant officially opened the doors of Gallup, under its first name, the British Institute of Public Opinion. In doing so he was holding up a new kind of mirror to our society which afforded insights so valuable that the process has gone on and expanded ever since, taken up by competitors, by academic institutes and by governments for the unique understanding it gives us of who we are, what we do and sometimes why.
