Abstract
The average age of menopause in Great Britain is 51 years; a late menarche may correlate with early menopause. During the climacteric there is a gradual change by the body to using oestrone, formed by peripheral convertion of androstenedione, rather than oestradiol produced by the ovary. This oestrogen withdrawal results in raised FSH and LH levels.
