Abstract
Aristotle, son of Nicomachus, was born in the small city of Stageira in northern Greece in 384 BC (in what follows all dates are BC). It still happens today in Greek villages that when family and friends perceive exceptional talent in a young member of the community considerable effort is invested in providing him with the best education available. In Aristotle’s case, his guardian, a certain Proxenos, made provisions to send him to Athens where he joined Plato’s Academy at the age of 17.
