Abstract
Walter Pater was the son of a surgeon, educated at King’s School, Canterbury, and the Queen’s College, Oxford. In 1864 he was elected a Fellow of Brasenose College, Oxford. He was an admirer of the Pre-Raphaelite Movement, and an aesthete. From 1869 he lived with his two unmarried sisters, Hester and Clara, in Oxford and then in London: the decoration of his houses was greatly influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite artists. Among his friends were numbered Swinburne, the Rossettis, the Humphrey Wards and the Mark Pattisons.
