Abstract

Wordsworth is one of the greatest poets in the history of English literature, particularly noted for his long autobiographical poem, The Prelude, and famous as a sonneteer. Although the greatest poet of the first half of the nineteenth century he was Poet Laureate for only seven years, 1843–50, when he succeeded Southey who had held the position for thirty years.
