Abstract

One of six children, five daughters and a son, of Patrick Brontë, perpetual curate of Haworth, Yorkshire, Charlotte early on had literary inclinations. She was influenced by the work of Walter Scott, Byron, by the Arabian Nights, and the art of John Martin. She was educated at Miss Wooler’s School at Roe Head where she subsequently became a teacher, 1835–8.
