Abstract

Thomas Carew (pronounced ‘Carey’) was born in London, the son of a prominent court official. He was educated at Merton College, Oxford, and studied law at the Middle Temple. From 1613 to 1616 he served as private secretary to Sir Dudley Carleton in Venice, Turin and The Hague. He lived for some time at the French court, and in 1629 became a courtier at the court of King Charles.
