Abstract
Samuel Daniel was born in Somerset, the son of a music teacher. He was educated at Magdelen Hall, Oxford, but did not take a degree. He visited Italy, and then became tutor to William Herbert (son of the Earl of Pembroke), and lived with the Herbert family at Wilton House, near Salisbury. He later became tutor to Lady Anne Clifford, daughter of the Countess of Cumberland, and lived at their home in Skipton (Yorkshire). He served on occasion as a court poet, and eventually retired to a farm in Wiltshire.
