Abstract

Walter de la Mare was born at Charlton in Kent and educated at St Paul’s Choir School in London. He became a distinguished man of letters. A gifted writer for children, he also wrote very mature short stories, and some magical poems. He was made a Companion of Honour in 1948 and awarded the Order of Merit in 1953. W. H. Auden edited A Choice of de la Mare’s Verse (1963).
