Abstract

The student will be aware of the significance of reinforced concrete in which steel reinforcement in the form of bars or fabric is inserted to provide much greater resistance to tensile stresses. It is necessary to distinguish between in situ concrete, where the concrete is poured in its final position on the site, and precast concrete, where the components are prefabricated and subsequently placed in position in the structure. Yet another type is prestressed concrete, where a stress is artificially induced in the concrete by means of tendons tensioned before working loads are applied. Gun applied concrete is measured in m2, with slabs, walls, beams and columns separately classified (SMM E11.1–4.1.0.0).
