Abstract
Alteration work comprises the demolition of existing buildings, alterations, repairs and renovations to them, and often items of new work. The main work section in the Standard Method covering this class of work is section C: Demolition/Alteration/Renovation. Alteration work can be included with demolition work in a single Bill or, alternatively, the alterations and new work can be taken elsewhere with the relevant work sections in accordance with the appropriate rules. For example, forming a door opening in an existing wall involves not only the work of cutting the opening and extending and making good wall and floor finishes, and insertion of a reinforced concrete lintel in accordance with SMM C20.5.2.0.1–3, but also the provision of the door, frame or lining, ironmongery and painting, incorporating items from sections L20 (timber doors), P21 (ironmongery) and M60 (painting).
