Abstract
At first sight, there is something paradoxical, if not actually perverse, in considering Philippe Pétain as a Caesar. For as the adoption of the word in Russian under the form of ‘Czar’ clearly indicates, one of its primary associations is that of strength. Caesars are in command of the situation. They do what they want and they exercise genuine power.
