Abstract
Shelters (refuges, transition houses, Frauenhäuser, crisis centres) are the first specific institution for the treatment of family violence. Since the first Chiswick shelter in London in 1971 (Pizzey, 1974) their number has grown rapidly. There are now more than 100 shelters in Canada, 200 in Great Britain and at least 500 in the United States (Response, 1983). In Finland there are 15 shelters.
This study was finished mainly by the Finnish Foundation for Alcohol Studies.
