Abstract
It is easy to over-react to the Duke; easy to forget that Dukes once possessed real power, and that the duty of subjects was obedience. It is therefore important to sift out from our responses that part of us that resents the Duke, simply because he thinks he has the right to manipulate his subjects. The fact is that rulers of that time — kings in England, and sometimes Dukes abroad — did have that right.
