Abstract
Bethell’s Study of The Winter’s Tale avoids treating the play as an allegory, though his edition, with its pointers towards Shakespeare’s ‘inner meaning’, is less restrained (1956, e.g. pp. 33–40). Others go much further. Though most contribute little to the debate on the play, they illustrate a great deal about the practice of criticism.
