Abstract
On 26 September 1962 the Government of Yemen was overthrown by a coup. The Imam, whose family had ruled for years, and who had succeeded his father only a few days earlier, was ousted, and was at first believed to have been killed. A republican government was established under Colonel Sallal, with the support of the Free Yemeni Movement based in Cairo.
