Abstract
A film scene: Two young, attractive, hedonist Weimar decadents — the audience’s sympathies are with them — chance upon a picturesque scene while motoring on a sunny day. A smart young Brownshirt begins to sing; clean, clear, evocative: ‘Gather together to greet the sun/Tomorrow belongs to me.’ First his comrades, then the rest of the assembled citizenry join in, swelling the refrain to an uplifting, hopeful climax.
