Abstract
What follows is a reading of a text — in this case, the ‘We Are the World’ record — and then some thoughts on why it seems to me inadequate, not only as a reading, but as a locating of the text.
A composite of an article published in Artforum, May 1985, and a talk given at a conference of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music in Montreal, July 1985.
