The domain of medicine
Infertility is a serious political problem. Many women with fertility problems demand the right to IVF treatment; many say they are happy to be a ‘guinea pig’ for medical science. IVF is not about infertility in particular, although IVF advocates have promoted it as such. In this chapter I explore more closely the application of IVF on women in the name of medical treatment, to show why it is not and never can be a treatment for fertility problems, and to show some of what IVF-as-medical-procedure is about.
