Abstract
The advent of machines into the office is often thought of as a modern innovation and it is sometimes forgotten that their introduction goes back into the last century, starting with the typewriter and the telephone. This introduction of machines was responsible for far-reaching changes, not only in organisation, but also in the methods of work, in the tempo of the work, and to a large extent in the personnel of the office: particularly, it opened the door to the woman clerical worker without whose services present-day commerce and industry would come to a halt.
