Abstract

An inaccurate recording of the fetal heart rate as a result of a faulty signal pick-up may mask a significant fetal heart rate pattern. The following two. CTGs were recorded sequentially in the same woman in labour, the first using Doppler, the second following application of a fetal scalp electrode. Note the clue in the first CTG, which is the entry recording the fetal heart rate as 170 b.p.m. on auscultation, as opposed to the apparent rate of 145 b.p.m. The recognition of an unsatisfactory Doppler recording in labour warrants application of a scalp electrode.
