The Rising Hope 1832–41

  • E. J. Feuchtwanger

The Duke of Newcastle’s offer of a parliamentary seat at Newark came to Gladstone as an event of ‘extraordinary import’. His conscience was deeply agitated: the old doubts about the choice of a secular career rose up again; the Duke’s wellknown hostility to Canning, ‘the most profligate Minister the country had ever had’, disturbed Gladstone and he also feared that his independence as a Member would be limited by the Duke. These quaims were eased when he realized that his father was entirely in favour of accepting the offer.
