Abstract
The study of international crises and the study of war and its causes are far more closely related than is often realised. Crisis research is still very much in its infancy in relation to the age of warfare, which has existed ever since humans formed into groups during the Stone Age and competed for food and shelter. Indeed the conduct of war brought societies into existence to begin with, and until recently has been one of their principal functions.
