Abstract
Social work within area teams of Social Services Departments offers great potential for varied and interesting work and, with it, a high level of stress. Workers frequently talk of feeling deskilled and of their fear of becoming emotionally blunted. There is a sense that if the work could be organised differently, it would be more creative and a better service would be offered, yet there is often considerable resistance to change.
