Further Array Topics

Introduction to Antennas

Abstract

In this chapter a selection of more advanced topics is dealt with. These are mainly associated with phased arrays. They are selected because they contain fundamental principles which are not necessarily obvious as extrapolations of the basic theory presented earlier. Phased arrays are an important class of antenna, because they allow electronic control of their aperture excitation. This allows beam shaping, beam steering and null steering. They do however have the major problem of high cost. A number of antenna systems can be devised which do not have the complete flexibility of a fully phased array, but offer some of its advantages at a more reasonable cost. Sections 6.2, 6.3 and 6.4 include some examples of this.
