Abstract
The emphasis in the movement towards the equality of the sexes has traditionally been on the removal of sex-based discrimination expressed in overtly discriminatory or indirectly discriminatory rules and practices. At one time it might have been thought that to outlaw discrimination, and attempt to educate persons to conduct their affairs on the basis of a simple non-discrimination principle, would be sufficient to achieve, within a reasonable time, the goal of genuinely equal life opportunities for persons, regardless of their sex.
