Abstract
This chapter is used to give a simplified overall view of a digital computer. A schematic viewpoint is used which can be related to more practical details in the following chapters. The potential of the digital computer is considered by indicating the diverse nature of common applications. The importance of human communication with the computer is explained with reference to a simple keyboard/display, such as the Visual Display Unit (VDU).
