Abstract

The themes discussed in the previous chapters inevitably distort reality to some extent, and if violent social upheaval and unrest was the experience of many regions and sections of Italian society in these years, many others remained more tranquil. In the cities, as we have seen, collective disorder was the exception rather than the norm and while some regions gained a reputation for persistent violence or lawlessness, others such as Piedmont and Tuscany became proverbial for their peacefulness.1
