Abstract

People talk of having ‘bad nerves’ or ‘breaking down’ or fearing that they are ‘going mad’. These phrases mean different things to different people, but common to them all is the experience of severe ‘mental pain’. It is hard to separate ‘mental pain’ from ‘bodily pain’, because mental anguish consists of painful feelings which always produce unpleasant sensations in our bodies.
