The Use of Technology and the Development of Qualifications: How the Debate about the Labour Process is Viewed in German Industrial Sociology

Abstract

In this chapter I discuss statements made in the debate about the labour process, particularly Braverman’s views on the development of qualifications, and relate them to results of research conducted in German industrial sociology. In so doing, however, I have encountered two difficulties of which I first really became aware in 1986 during many interesting discussions at the Birmingham conference on ‘Organisation and Control of the Labour Process’. They result from the systematic differences in the organisation of work, training, and industrial relations, as well as from the different research strategies pursued by industrial sociology in Great Britain and the Federal Republic of Germany.
