Abstract

Many events, trends and people contributed to the birth of the Social Democratic Party. Nevertheless, among a collection of factors, some stand out as particularly poignant and significant. One such was the death from lupus erythematosus, on 18 January 1963, of Hugh Todd-Naylor Gaitskell, the leader of the Labour Party.
