Stratification is a key concept of sociology. Traditionally, it has been linked in sociological theory to employment and occupation and, while relationship to the system of production is clearly one of the fundamental forces structuring society, the purpose of this chapter is to consider the effect of the life cycle on three distinct but related dimensions by which society may be stratified.
