Developments, Definitions and Reactions
Any book on child abuse should begin with some definitions of the topic. However, there are strong reasons, in our view, why this is not possible in anything but the broadest sense. Child abuse as an aspect of human social behaviour must be seen in its proper historical and sociological contexts and these are both complex. A thorough analysis is not possible in a practice handbook and we would refer readers to Parton’s The Politics of Child Abuse (1985) for both its text and extensive references.
