Abstract
For many people today the word Religionskrieg is an emotive one. Occasional news items about bloody battles in the Near East between Moslem sects leave us baffled, and the civil war between Christians in Northern Ireland seems painfully embarrassing. Many people evince a similar reaction to the European confessional wars of the early modern period. The mere historical fact of the Konfessionskriegin the sixteenth century strikes large sections of the present-day world as a scandal.
