Abstract
After the Second World War, a great deal of thought was given to the causes of poverty and underdevelopment. The theories then put forward fell into two categories: modernisation and dependency. The first contends that the poor countries are not yet adequately modernised, that they are backward. The second emphasises the subordinate, dependent position of the poor and of the poor countries; their dependence on groups at home or abroad.
