Abstract
Over the months of writing this book, one major change in the social approach to those with AIDS and HIV infection has occurred: a Government-sponsored education campaign has emphasised that AIDS is not a ‘gay disease’. All sexually active persons with more than one partner are potentially at risk of exposure to this infection if they do not take personal responsibility for infection control and use condoms and lubricants. However, rather than providing a reassuring message for the general population, many have been frightened and new fuel has been added to the arguments of the ‘moral right’ in their denunciation of those persons most at risk of future infection and disease. So, despite the recent Government involvement, there is more than ever a need for sober and clear discussion of the facts of HIV and its (personal) management.
