Abstract

Almost all of the factors discussed in Chapter 1 have contributed to a growth in the crimes of kidnap and extortion of all kinds, for political or pecuniary gain. This growth has been a part of two other trends: a general growth of violent crime; and a general growth in political violence since 1968. There have been about 2500 recorded kidnaps since 1976 and there have undoubtedly been many more which were never reported.
