Abstract
Eight million Kurds live in a mountainous region straddling five countries, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Turkey and the USSR; they have an ethnic and cultural identity of their own and wish to be united in a single state of Kurdistan. Since 1980 Iraq and Iran have each exploited Kurdish aspirations in the territory of the other to draw troops away from the Gulf War. The Kurdish Socialist Party of Iraq (KSPI), who carried out the abduction described in this study, is thus encouraged by Iran.
