Abstract

The banners fluttered gaily, and the wind ruffled the saffron robes of the Japanese Buddhist monks. They walked slowly together, in twos, holding the flat circular drums in their left hands and short curved sticks in their right. With their shaven heads, and their faces half smiling, half sad, they seemed timeless, without age. They banged their drums constantly in a simple rhythm, chanting at the same time: ‘Nauru Myo Ho Ren Ge Kyo’.
