Abstract

The first production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof opened in 1955 at the Morosco Theatre in New York. It was directed by Elia Kazan with Ben Gazzara as Brick, Barbara Bel Geddes as Margaret, and Burl Ives as Big Daddy. The set and lighting were by Jo Mielziner. The 1958 London production was directed by Peter Hall with Paul Massie as Brick, Kim Stanley as Margaret, and Leo McKern as Big Daddy. The 1958 screen version was written by James Poe and Richard Brooks, and directed by Richard Brooks with Paul Newman, Elizabeth Taylor and Burl Ives. The 1974 New York revival was directed by Michael Kahn with Keir Dullea, Elizabeth Ashley and Fred Gwynne. A television adaptation was produced in 1976 with Robert Wagner, Natalie Wood and Laurence Olivier, and another in 1984 with Tommy Lee Jones, Jessica Lange and Rip Torn.
