Abstract
An explicit analysis of the role of the State and State policy adds an important dimension to the study of the interaction of culture, education and society. The literature on the sociology of education has been dominated by two polar views: education as social leveller versus education as reproducer of the existing class system. Separating out the State, society and culture allows for a more nuanced analysis and places the discussion on a new plane.
