Abstract
In this chapter groups and what they may be used for will be introduced. By discussing the various types of groups, their purposes and applications, practitioners may be encouraged to be clear about what type of group they envisage — the first stage in effective groupwork. This requires that they identify their main and secondary purposes for a group and the values and theoretical frameworks which they are seeking to apply.
