Part of the book series: Explorations in Sociology ((EIS))

Abstract

Man’s violence against women has only recently been reborn as a concern worthy of academic debate or public recognition. Although the problem has an extensive history, pressures for change did not gain much significance until the second wave of feminism was awarded some repute a mere fifteen years or so ago (Dobash and Dobash, 1979; Schecter, 1982). Although we have begun to uncover the extent of physical and sexual abuse, to estimate incidences and assess the adequacy of remedies, there is still much work to be done, particularly in the area of the law.
