Abstract

In the early nineteenth century, two British women played a prominent role in chemistry. Elizabeth Fulhame performed original research on reduction which led her to challenge the contemporary theories. She deserves recognition as probably the first woman chemist of modern time. Jane Marcet wrote a classic introductory chemistry text which made a major impact on both sides of the Atlantic for nearly half a century.
