Abstract
In 1800 Alessandro Volta, experimenting in Italy, developed the first modern electric battery. A few months after, two British scientists, Nicholson and Carlisle, succeeded in breaking matter down into its components by putting in electricity. In this experiment, the electricity was put into water which separated into hydrogen and oxygen.
