Abstract

The text from Hemingway’s Fiesta, described in Chapter 6, section 6.9, contained a number of kernel clauses, but the other non-kernel clauses remain to be discussed. They either contain complex phrases as constituents, or else differ from a kernel clause in one or more of its basic features:

  1. (a)

    finite (tensed)

  2. (b)

    declarative mood

  3. (c)

    in the active voice, and

  4. (d)

in the order SP (C) (A)

and so they are said to be derived from kernel clauses. Some of them will be referred to in this chapter, but there is a more complete commentary in Chapter 8.
