Abstract

This book began with a chapter on clauses as propositions. The word proposition was used in the sense of an assertion or statement, and it was suggested that this is a basic unit of communication between ourselves and others. The meaning of a complete proposition, expressing a unified aspect of our experience or thought, is encoded into English by means of the grammatical unit called clause.
