Abstract
According to G.K. Chesterton — an early and influential critic of Dickens — there is no such novel as Nicholas Nickleby, no such novel as Our Mutual Friend: they are ‘simply lengths cut from the flowing and mixed substance called Dickens’ (1906, p. 66).
