Abstract

Our political leaders have made it known that they would be prepared to fight a nuclear war to defend the freedom of the western world. I do not here wish to discuss whether anything is so valuable as to be worth defending by nuclear war. However, one thing is clear: if it is possible even to contemplate that the protection of our freedom may justify nuclear war, then this freedom must be supremely valuable.
