A child aged four is taken to the doctor by his mother because she has noticed large bruises appearing on his legs. He looks pale and is described by his mother as being rather quiet and listless lately, the reverse of his usually lively self. The doctor finds the mucous membranes pale and he can feel a few enlarged nodes in the neck and an enlarged spleen. His suspicions are aroused and the results of a blood test confirm them, his diagnosis, acute leukaemia.
